Right place, right time: Sergeant stops theft at Lincoln County Lowes

- Lincoln County Sheriff’s Sgt. P.B. McNeill had just pulled into the parking lot of Lowes on NC 73 Highway in Denver when he saw two men running from the lumber entrance at the store and jump into a vehicle.

The car, with a partially hidden South Dakota license plate, attempted to leave the parking lot toward Highway 73 but Sgt. McNeill conducted a traffic stop before the car reached the highway.

As he approached the vehicle, Sgt. McNeill could see a Hitachi 18 volt cordless finish nailer between the front seats.

Store employees told the Lincoln County Sheriff's Office the men exited through the lumber section and walked behind another customer that was being waited on by the clerk. The clerk asked for a receipt and the suspects ran from the scene. The power tool was recovered and returned to the store.

Michael John Peele, 34, and Danny Ray Cape II, 34, both of Charlotte, were charged with one misdemeanor count each of larceny, possession of stolen goods and conspiracy. Both are jailed under a $5,000 secured bond each.

The third person was not charged in the incident.
