A South Charlotte woman is warning others to be alert, after she woke up to find a stranger standing in her bedroom early Monday morning. The suspect is still on the run.
"I think this is any woman's nightmare," said the victim. FOX 46 is not releasing her identity for her own safety.
It's a terrifying scenario for anyone sleeping in their home. A stranger breaks in, without setting off an alarm.
"I woke up and saw a figure to my right about 3 feet from me of a man standing there," said the victim.
Terrified, the victim ran downstairs and out the front door.
"When I was on the porch I heard him exit the back door because I heard the alarm and it was 30 seconds after I was on the front porch," said the victim.
Once safe outside, she called 911. Shortly after CMPD arrived and a search dog picked up a scent. The suspect caught, but was later released.
"Because I can't obviously have an eyewitness because it was very dark and he either had this dark hoodie or a face mask on so I wasn't about to identify him," said the victim.
Whoever broke in, cut a screen, then came through an unlocked back window. The victim said it may not have been the first time.
"I had a little plant on my window sill that I noticed a couple of days ago was in the sink and I didn't think anything of that either but now looking back I realized he has either been in the house or he tested the window to make sure it could come up," said the victim.
It was a frightening thought for the single mother of a young child.
"I felt a lot of fear that I hadn't done enough to protect my son," she said.
Luckily, he wasn't home during Monday's break in. The victim said this could happen in any neighborhood.
"Please check your security and watch out for safety because this can happen anywhere," she said.
We're told CMPD collected DNA evidence at the scene, but it may take two to three months to process.
The victim said she has had trouble sleeping at night since Monday's frightening run in and has spent time away from home the past couple days.
