Search for guman who fired shots in elementary school parking lot continues

- Police are searching for a gunman shot at another person in the parking lot of Lawrence Orr Elementary School, in east Charlotte. The Monday morning attack was not random, police said, and no one was injured.

"At this time we're still trying to determine who the shooter was," said Lt. Brad Koch with CMPD. "And what the motives of this particular shooting were."

The shooter was dropped off at the school, shortly after 9 am arrival time, where he waited for the intended victim, police said. Investigators say the shooter fired an unknown number of rounds as the victim was leaving the parking lot exiting onto Shamrock Road.

The shooter ran away. No children or bystanders were injured.

Investigators believe the victim, who also was not injured, and the shooter knew each other. It is unclear how or what may have sparked the attack.

"We're speaking with the victim of the shooting," said Koch. "So we're trying to determine the relationship there."

The school, filled with young kids, went on lockdown for at least an hour.

The intended victim struck a woman's car attempting to get away from the shooter and later called 911.

Police say the bullets were aimed away from the school. That does not make Marie Bittle, a grandmother, feel any better.

"I pray that they catch these people," said Bittle. "Put them behind bars and let them stay for a long are a sleazebag and you need to be put away."

The intended victim struck another car trying to escape and later called 911.

"Safety and security is important to me," principal Kimberly Vaught said in a communication to parents. "Everyone at Orr is safe and no one was injured. This did not involve anyone from the school."

However, police do not yet know if either the shooter, or the victim, are parents with kids who attend the school.

Investigators say they have "an idea of the parties involved."

"We hope to have a pretty quick resolution to this case," said Koch.

Anyone with information is urged to call Crime Stoppers at (704) 334-1600.
