Serious crash shuts down I-77 for hours and sends three to the hospital

- Serious crash involving a tractor trailer on Interstate 77 northbound shuts down highway for hours Wednesday morning.

Around 6:45 a.m. the call came in for a crash with possible entrapment on Interstate 77 northbound. Viewers called Fox 46 Charlotte telling us six vehicles and a tractor trailer had just wrecked on the interstate near Sunset Road, exit 16. Although, officials have not yet confirmed how many vehicles were involved.

The Interstate closed between exit 13- Sunset Road, and exit 16- Interstate 85. Traffic was diverted to Statesville Road. This crash caused back-ups on Interstate 77 to extend over six miles.

Emergency crews had a difficult time getting to the scene due to the location of the wreck being in the construction zone, as well as, traffic congestion. At one point, Huntersville Fire Department was called out to the scene due to access issues, but later canceled.

According to Medic, three people have been transported to the hospital. One patient with life threatening injuries, one patient with potentially life threatening injuries, and one person with minor injuries. 

North Carolina Department of Transportation told Fox 46 Charlotte, the interstate is expected to remain closed until 2 p.m. Wednesday afternoon.




Consider Beatties Ford Road as an alternate route. From Uptown, consider Graham Street to Sugar Creek to Harris Boulevard and then proceed to Interstate 77.




Officials have not said the cause of the wreck.
