Severe weather destroys portion of home in Gastonia

- Severe storms caused damage throughout the area Friday night. Saturday morning brought the first opportunity for homeowners to cleanup. In Gastonia, one tree near the Holy Trinity Lutheran Church was no match for the wind. It took down some power lines and landed in a parking lot. Even more extensive and serious damage happened just a block down the road.

"If  I had come home early and had been in my bedroom where I normally would have been it would have been tragic," said homeowner, Traci Spasvo.

Spasvo, still shaken up from her experience didn't want to appear on camera, but wanted to tell her story. She was at work when she got a call from police telling her a tree crashed through her home. The damage ito the rear of her home was extensive.

"It went through the side of the house where the master bedroom is located and the master bath and essentially the roof, attic, ceiling collapsed into the bedroom itself," said Spasvo.

The towering tree destroyed her home in a matter of seconds. It's a fear Traci has had since she bought her house two years ago.

"You could tell visibly. It was diseased by just the base itself and looking at the branch and limbs," she said.

With the tree on neighboring property, there is little Traci could do. The house next door is vacant, so she called the city for answers. Traci says no one would take responsibility in a timely matter.  Now she is left out thousands of dollars in cleanup and repair costs.

"It's just frustrating no one would do anything about it no one wants the liability for it and I am stuck with it and it's not even my tree," said Spasvo.

Many homeowners say they are still waiting on insurance adjusters because they have been so busy this weekend because of the amount of damage throughout the area.
