Sex offender charged with raping two teen girls in 90', 94'

- A Charlotte registered sex offender has been arrested in connection to the rape of two teenage girls that occurred back in the 1990s, police said.

Warren Lee Caldwell, 56, was arrested last week and charged with two counts of second-degree rape, common law robbery, and one count of first-degree kidnapping.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg police said a DNA match led detectives to identifying him. The victims were 17 and 18-years-old at the time.

The first sexual assault was reported around 3:32 a.m. Oct. 16, 1990 in the 1400 block of Samuel Street. The victim, who was 18 at the time, told officers that a man had raped her and then robbed her of property. The suspect had fled the scene on foot.

The second attack was reported around 8:56 a.m. Feb. 4, 1994 in the 2400 block of N. Tryon. The victim, who was 17 at the time, told police she was waiting at a bus stop when an unknown man pulled up next to her in his vehicle. He then proceeded to force her into his car and drove to another location where he raped her before letting her go.

In both cases, DNA evidence was collected which eventually led to the arrest of Caldwell. CMPD said the evidence from both cases was included for testing as part of a federal grant they received.

Caldwell is a registered sex offender who was convicted in 2002 of indecent liberties with a child. He has been arrested more than 50 times, but was not incarcerated at the time of his arrest.
