Shelby teen dies after crashing into tree

High school senior Elizabeth Drum died after losing control of her car and crashing into a tree Tuesday afternoon.
Police said Drum was traveling south on South Lafayette Street when she swerved off the road.
They said she tried to get back on but over corrected, and that move sent her straight to the other side of the road and into the front yard of 1905 South Lafayette Street.
The driver's side of the vehicle struck the tree, police said.
Drum was transported to Carolinas HealthCare System Cleveland Hospital where she was pronounced dead.
A memorial is now at the site of the crash.
NC State Highway Patrol Trooper Theis told FOX 46 Charlotte that the main cause was thought to be weather but now they believe speeding was the main factor in the accident.
Drum was graduating from high school this year and was heading to get graduation photos done before the accident occurred.
