MECKLENBURG COUNTY, NC (FOX 46 WJZY) - Mecklenburg County Sheriff Irwin Carmichael announced Wednesday they've had five deaths in five months at the jail, a number the sheriff said "In my 32 years I've never seen this."
The sheriff's office and the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department are currently investigating the recent apparent suicide death of 33-year old Karla Griffin.
Griffin was an inmate at Jail North housed in a general housing pod, police said.
Her death occurred just after midnight on October 3, 2018. Authorities said it appears she took her life with a bed sheet.
The FBI will be conducting its own separate investigation into these deaths, Carmichael said. Of the five deaths, three were suicides.
Sheriff Carmichael held a news conference Wednesday regarding the deaths that started in May 2018:
**This story has been corrected to reflect that there were five deaths, three of which were suicides.
