Sheriff: Student caught with semi-automatic handgun at East Rowan High School

- A student has been arrested after he was caught with a semi-automatic handgun on school property, according to the Rowan County Sheriff's Office.

Donald Marion Maness has been charged with firearm on educational property after deputies located a Smith and Wesson .40 caliber semi-automatic handgun in his book bag on Wednesday, Nov. 14.

Staff from Nazareth Children’s Home had contacted Sgt. Scott Flowers with the Rowan County Sheriff’s Office with a concern that one of their students may possess a firearm at East Rowan High School.

Three students at East Rowan were questioned before the firearm was located in Maness' book bag.

Deputies determined the handgun was reported stolen from a pick up truck that had been parked at 1212 Bird Dog Trail in Rockwell. The theft happened sometime after midnight on Nov. 12.

Maness was placed in the Rowan County Detention Center under a $5,000 secured bond.
