Sinkhole in Southeast Charlotte causes concern

- A massive sink hole opened up in the middle of parking lot for a popular movie theater and shopping center in Southeast Charlotte.

It was a car turning in to Carolina Cinemas that first alerted people working in a nearby strip mall that something was wrong.

“My sister and my brother heard it when a car drive by she hit a big bump, then she ran out to see it and what happened.”  said Nancy Nguyen

A massive sinkhole, at least 8 feet across, opened in middle of the parking lot.

“I ran out to see and we saw the big hole," said Nguyen.

A hole Nguyen says was big enough to swallow a car, so she ran to a nearby barber for help. Before police arrived to block off the parking lot, employees took it upon themselves to warn drivers by making a barricade with the help of a nearby movie theater.

“We try to stop the people and make sure they don’t drive by, " said Nguyen.

Charlotte Water arrived on scene with in minutes to inspect the hole. Workers could be seen using a selfie stick to snap pictures inside the crater.

The hole was just feet away from a half dozens business, who were forced to close early out of safety concerns. The sudden sinkhole, rattling the nerves of those working nearby.

“It makes me a little scared and my customers wonder too that they may be scared then," said Nguyen.

Crews are still investigating how the hole opened, but people who work in the area say during heavy rains, water tends to pool in the middle of the parking lot in the exact area where the hole opened up.
