South Charlotte neighbors take matters into own hands against burglar

- Someone is trying to break into homes in South Charlotte in the Ashbrook Clawson Village neighborhood and in at least one case, CMPD says they were successful.

"We are always looking out for each other," said one neighbor.

Neighbors along Sewickley Drive immediately called 911 to report a suspicious person Monday morning. Around 8:30 a.m. someone tried breaking into a home, setting off a security alarm. CMPD says they never made entry.

Around two hours later a different home was broken into. This time the suspect made off with around $1,600 in jewelry.

"Everybody was talking about the break-ins. I think there is a very high level of vigilance in the neighborhood now," said neighbor, John Mayo.

One neighbor snapped a photo of a suspicious person walking away from the backyard of the home with a backpack. That same person was spotted by several neighbors circling the neighborhood.

"Almost without question the same individual," said Mayo.

The picture was handed over to police. So far, no arrests have been made. Those living along Sewickley Drive say this criminal chose the wrong neighborhood.

"Maybe they will just go towards other career paths besides thievery," said Mayo.

CMPD says there was a similar attempted break-in June 1 along Murrayhill Road, but it's unclear if it's related to this case.
