CONCORD, NC (FOX 46 WJZY) - There may not be any snow on the ground in the Charlotte area, but it’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas just up the road in Concord.
The high banks of Charlotte Motor Speedway have been transformed to look more like a scene straight out of the north pole.
“It is overwhelming. There are so many lights. It’s definitely very, very nice,” Dequarius Lewis from Charlotte said.
There are about 3 million lights setup at the speedway and all are synchronized to holiday music. The transformation didn’t happen overnight. Work started after the last NASCAR race at the track in October.
Crews were working double shifts to finish the spectacular before the first cars drove through Sunday night.
“When the little girls saw it their eyes lit up and they were very excited and very happy,” said Lewis, who brought his daughters along for the ride around the speedway.
This is the 8th year Speedway Christmas has brought smiles to faces young and old. Visitors returning this year may spot some new display. Speedway officials say about one third of all lights are switched out yearly.
“So many of the displays are animated. So it’s a lot of fun to look at something like Santa Clause and see he is on a ski jump in the mountains,” Scott Cooper from Charlotte Motor Speedway said.
Speedway Christmas is open daily now through December 31, except for Christmas Day. For a full look at the schedule of events click here.
