Statesville couple uses winning lottery ticket to help those struggling with drug addiction

- Terri and Terry McClelland have the same name and same goals for their lottery winnings. The Statesville couple won thousands of dollars from a scratch off ticket over the weekend.

Terri is a full-time student working towards her doctorate in psychology. Her husband, Terry, works at a nearby plant.

“My husband won $250,000 on a scratch off on Saturday here in Statesville. I’ve always had the dream of doing something about trying to help people with the opioid and drug crisis because I’ve been impacted by it,” Terri said.

Terri told FOX 46 Charlotte that one of her relatives has challenges with substance abuse. The couple plans to open an outreach center in the county with some of the money won from the scratch off. They want to help people work through and overcome their addiction struggle.

“I just want to do something to help out. That’s the first thing I thought about,” she said. “If we motivate others we can help them live their lives holistically.”

The couple took the lump sum of $173,754. They play the lottery often, but they’ve never won this big before. In addition to the outreach center, the couple is also planning to spend some of the money on a big family trip to Disney World.
