Statesville police search for driver in deadly hit-and-run

- The Statesville Police Department is investigating after a Statesville man was killed in an early morning hit-and-run crash. 

The accident happened at 5:45 a.m. Monday, July 4 along Garner Bagnal Blvd. and Buffalo Shoals Road.

Upon arrival, officers found a Chevrolet Cavalier off of the roadway against the utility pole guide wires. The driver was still in the vehicle and EMS was called to the scene. 

A short time after EMS arrived, they pronounced the driver of the Chevrolet, Reynaldo Carbajal Hernandez, 43, of Statesville, dead. 

The second vehicle involved was a Toyota four-door passenger car with a Maryland tag. It was off the right side of the road further south on Buffalo Shoals Road. It was discovered this was a rental vehicle through Enterprise Rental Car. 

The driver of this vehicle fled the scene on foot. 

Traffic investigators along with criminal investigators responded to the scene.  It was determined the Chevrolet Cavalier was traveling west on Garner Bagnal Blvd. and the Toyota was traveling south on Buffalo Shoals Road.  

Polcie said the two vehicles collided in the intersection with the Toyota striking the Chevrolet in the passenger side at a high rate of speed. 

This incident remains under investigation.
