CHARLOTTE, NC (FOX 46 WJZY) - The man accused in the death of a North Carolina State Highway Patrol trooper has been taken into custody early Wednesday morning following an extensive search.
Dakota Whitt, 22, of Elkin, was found by authorities around 3:30 a.m. Wednesday, May 23. He was taken into custody without incident.
Whitt now faces murder charges in the death of Trooper Samuel N. Bullard, 24, who died earlier this week from his injuries after a brief chase and fiery crash.
The wreck happened around 11:30 p.m. Monday along Interstate-77 southbound near NC-67 in Yadkin County, north of Charlotte. During the chase, one trooper noticed he did not see a second patrol car behind him. When his attempt at contacting the other trooper failed, he turned around and found the patrol car engulfed in flames.
Several southbound lanes on I-77 were closed for several hours in Yadkin County following the deadly crash.
Whitt is currently being held at the Wilkes County Detention Center.
