South Charlotte SWAT situation ends peacefully; 2 firearms seized

- SWAT officers were on scene in south Charlotte Wednesday afternoon for reports of an armed, barricaded suspect at a psychological clinic.

The incident  was reported around 2:48 p.m. at 3303 Latrobe Dr. in the Eastover Psychological and Psychiatric Group building where a man said he was armed with a gun and was going to commit "suicide by cop." 

Once police officers arrived, the suspect barricaded himself inside of the building. CMPD was able to evacuate all employees from the building and began using de-escalation techniques.

SWAT was also contacted to negotiate and peacefully resolve the situation.

Police are asking that drivers and pedestrians avoid the area as the road is closed while they work the scene. After a standoff with SWAT and speaking with negotiators, the male continued to refuse to surrender to officers.

Just before 8:30 p.m.., the man surrendered without further incident. Two firearms were seized.

The suspect was not physically injured and will be taken to a mental health facility to receive treatment. Due to the nature of this incident his name is not being released.
