BESSEMER CITY, NC (FOX 46 WJZY) - Taylor Self Potter was at the table when her father, Roger Self, drove his car into a restaurant, killing her sister and sister-in-law.
Her mom, brother and niece were also injured in that attack. Her mom is still in the hospital, and Taylor has been by her side while also grieving the loss of her sister-in-law and her sister.
“Every memory I have, good and bad, is with her,” Taylor said of her sister, Katelyn Self.
The Self sisters shared friends, shared clothes and shared secrets.
“I remember the first time she called me and said 'there's a guy in my class and I'm going to marry him one day,'” Taylor said, as she recalled her sister telling her about Alex Burns, Kate’s fiancée.
Kate was right. Alex proposed on her birthday this past March. Both of them worked in law enforcement. They shared a love for police work, and a love for each other.
“I've always said he could have proposed with a twig that he made into a ring and she'd say yes, she was excited,” said Taylor.
They were supposed to get married in September.
“I hate it for him. I hate that I won't be able to help her get ready and do her hair and makeup and fix her jewelry and her dress,” she said.
On May 20, Taylor and her family were at church together and then they went to a Bessemer City restaurant for lunch.
Her father Roger Self got up from the table and drove his car into the restaurant, killing Kate and his daughter-in law Amanda.
Police say it was a deliberate attack on his own family.
“What is it like to lose two family members?” FOX 46’s Robin Kanady asked Taylor.
“There's not words it's hard to wrap your brain around, and I'm not so sure that it's even really hit us yet,” she responded.
Taylor doesn't want to talk about her dad or what happened that awful day.
“I have obviously so much hurt naturally, but God's good and in the middle of the night I feel that comfort, I feel that peace, and knowing that his love's big and his plan is always better than ours.”
FOX 46 is grateful to Taylor for sharing with us about her sister.
Kate was a Corporal at the Gaston County Sheriff's Office. Her funeral will be Sunday at Gastonia First Assembly of God.
