GASTONIA, NC (WJZY) - Police are trying to figure out why a teenager allegedly shot and killed two cousins - one who is disabled.
FOX 46 Charlotte spoke to a close family friend who is still struggling with the tragedy.
The family friend said the first sign that something was wrong inside the house was that no one came to the daycare to pick up an 8-month-old boy.
"That's my little baby, I love him to death, we all love him at the daycare," Loretta Gill said.
Gill is still in disbelief at the grisly discovery inside the home on Salemview Road early Friday morning.
Gill's neighbors, Derreck Brice, 33, and Lashea Coleman, 26, two cousins, were found shot to death inside their house.
"It's a tragedy, I wouldn't never think nothing like that would happen to my neighbors, I'm really shocked and surprised because I'm very close to both of them," Gill said.
Gill has known Coleman and Brice for years - and works at the daycare Colena's baby attends. Gill said Coleman suffers from cerebral palsy. She can't imagine why someone would want to hurt her friends, but she's grateful police have made an arrest.
Jose Adan Lopez Rios, 17, is charged with shooting and killing the two cousins.
"It's terrifying. It really is. It kinda makes you want to move but this is the first time anything like this has ever happened in this neighborhood," Katie Stiles said, a neighbor.
Gaston County police are not saying much about the relationship between the suspect and victims except that Lopez Rios and Brice knew one another.
Neighbors are upset that a baby is now without a mother.
"I really hate it. I couldn't imagine my kids growing up and not knowing me, it just devastates me."
The double-murder suspect, Jose Adam Lopez Rios, is being held at the Gaston County Jail. FOX 46 Charlotte was told he has a court appearance scheduled for Monday morning.
Gaston County police are asking anyone who may have information regarding Brice and Coleman to contact them at 704-866-3320 or CrimeStoppers at 704-861-8000.
The investigation is ongoing.
