UNION COUNTY, NC (FOX 46 WJZY) - Three 12-year-old children have been charged after multiple guns were brought to school this week in Union County, according to the Union County Sheriff's Office.
Detectives said they've identified the source of the handguns seized from a 12-year-old East Union Middle School student on Wednesday. They were able to determine another student brought two loaded handguns, a .380 handgun and a 9 mm handgun, to school.
The 12-year-old student brought the .380 handgun in exchange for a set of metallic knuckles. After one of the students was taken into custody for possessing the gun on school property, the student who had brought the weapons gave the loaded 9 mm to a third student to hold.
Detectives recovered the 9mm handgun from the 12-year-old child's home on Friday.
One of the two students charged on Friday faces two felony counts of possession of a firearm on educational property, two counts of possession of a firearm as a minor, and one count of possession of a weapon on educational property for the metallic knuckles.
Detectives said the third student has been charged with one felony count of possession of a firearm on educational property and a misdemeanor charge of possession of a firearm as a minor.
