CHARLOTTE, NC (FOX 46 WJZY) - Charlotte drivers are frustrated over a massive construction project starting at 9:00 p.m. on Monday, Dec. 3 on I-277 near uptown.
“It's already a mess it doesn't make any sense,” one driver told FOX 46.
I-277 Inner will be down to one lane just past the 10th St. exit all the way to 3rd St., and the left lane of U.S. 74 West approaching I-277 will be closed.
“I think that's going to be a lot of hectic problems,” said another.
The closures will be 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and they’re expected to last through December 21.
“They ought to finish one project before they start three others."
NCDOT contractors are closing the lanes in order to install a barrier wall to do work on three different bridges.
“I think a lot of the roads we use as back roads are going to be filled up."
FOX 46 Charlotte's Chuck Roads says that's right-- the lane closures are going to force a lot of traffic onto Central Ave,, Monroe Rd. and 7th St.
“I like how we're fixing our roads, going to be smoother, but I think we just got to be a little patient."
NCDOT officials say there was simply no good time to do these closures. They realize this is going to have a major impact on traffic, but they hope they'll be able to work faster, leaving the closures in place and barrier wall up, and not having to put it back down each day.
