Several people were injured after a tree came crashing down at Zootastic Park. The owner called it a freak accident.
Around 3:00 on Saturday afternoon, a 112-foot tree fell in between two wagons carrying more than 50 passengers who had stopped to feed the animals.
“A really unbelievable freak accident. The park is two miles long and there’s over 10-thousand trees in the park. To be sitting right where it was and if it would have been two feet further forward or two feet backward it would have landed on the wagons and it would’ve killed somebody,” said Scottie Brown, owner of Zootastic Park.
Brown said some people heard the tree falling and were injured while jumping out of the wagon. A woman was flown to the hospital with a laceration to her head caused by the wagon canopy and a child was taken by ambulance with a possible broken leg.
“People were gathering over there. They had ambulances everywhere and it was just terrifying,” said Danyelle Ealey who was at the park celebrating her anniversary.
Janette Maldonado was supposed to be on that wagon ride with her friend and their kids but they decided to go to the park and wait for the next ride.
“That was scary because of course our children and we’re here to have a good time and for something like that to happen is really devastating and for the people that were on it, it’s really sad,” said Maldonado.
Danyelle and Kyle had only been in the park for 15 minutes before the commotion started. They were in the General Store when they heard the calls for help come across the radio. They were also supposed to get on a wagon ride.
“We were going to be on the 4:00 ride, they shut that down. This was our first time here so, it’s just crazy. This place has been open for years, first time coming and then 15 minutes later a freak accident happens,” said Kyle Farley.
The park remained open and the tree was removed. Those who were injured are expected to be okay. Brown said none of the animals were injured.
