CHARLOTTE, NC (FOX 46 WJZY) - A man will face a judge on Monday for murder charges in a hit-and-run that took place nearly two years ago. Authorities said the driver was drunk when he killed a woman on South Boulevard.
Kelli Putnam, 28, was walking home with her boyfriend back in January 2016 from a Carolina Panthers game when she was hit and killed by a drunk driver who ran off nearly two years ago.
Gregory Wheeling is charged with second-degree murder, DWI and felony death by vehicle. Police said he ran into Putnam while she was walking along the sidewalk on South Boulevard near Remount Road back in 2016.
During the Panthers game against the Seahawks, Putnam had sent a photo to her family, beaming with excitement at the game, giving them one last flash of her radiant smile.
Putnam was pronounced dead at the scene. She was a waitress at Mac's Speed Shop and was laid to rest near her family in New York.
Friends and family are now hoping for justice in the court system as Wheeling is expected to stand trial on Monday. He previously plead not-guilty to his charges
