CHARLOTTE, NC (WJZY) - Officials have released the names of the mother and daughter who were killed after their car ended up under water in a rock quarry in Monroe.
"At approximately 3 p.m. Sunday afternoon we had a passing motorist that stopped at our station and told the firefighters working they had seen evidence of where a car had run off the road," Fire Chief Ron Fowler said.
The vehicle went off the road - and into a rock quarry.
"Firefighters began there search...we actually requested Charlotte Dive team for assistance with the diving operation. We did locate the one victim yesterday afternoon in the water and also located the vehicle," Fowler explained.
Shortly after 1 p.m. Monday the vehicle was pulled from the water and officials discovered a second body.
"The information that law enforcement was able to gather in talking with the owner of the vehicle we suspected there could be a second person with the lady we found yesterday. We suspected another female and that is what we found at this time," Fowler said.
The two victims identified Monday afternoon as a mother and daughter from Marshville - Gwendolyn Rape and her daughter Draya Rape.
"Certainly tragic anytime there is a loss of life and this incident, it is. I can't say anymore about it. It is tragic," Fowler said.
Officials told FOX 46 Charlotte they hope the investigation as to what happened wraps up quickly.
"You know the family is going to want to know what happened and then just for the general public safety, public justice, you want to know why something happened. So I am sure that law enforcement is doing all they can to determine that," Fowler said.
As for Quarry Road, it will be shutdown until repairs can be made on the guardrail.
