FOX 46 Charlotte recognizes teachers who get results.
From singing her lessons, to building relationships inside the classroom-- this week, FOX 46 Charlotte is highlighting Mrs. Tess Cornell, a first grade teacher at Wingate Elementary.
"I always said I would never sing in the classroom because I can't sing," said Cornell. "But it gets their attention, so I sing on a daily basis."
Inside Mrs. Cornell's first grade classroom, you'll find young kids conversing and preparing for their futures.
"She's great with her kids and teaches them how to have conversations and they're in the first grade," said Wingate Assistant Principal Shanda Lauri. "They do a great job facilitating each other while they're learning."
"I was shocked," said Cornell, when we showed up to award her. "That's exciting. I mean, you kind of feel like a little person-- but when you get this, it's exciting! It's nice to be recognized."
Even in the first grade, it doesn't take much for her young students to realize how great their teacher is.
"Because she's a really great teacher!" said her student.
For Mrs. Cornell, teaching is a passion.
"Getting to spend time with kids and just seeing the lightbulb go off-- that's what makes it all worth it."
Building relationships, setting standards for second grade and keeping kids attentive are just some of the many things that make Mrs. Cornell an amazing teacher.
"She works really hard to make sure they're where they need to be by the end of the year," said Lauri. "And all around does a wonderful job with the kids."
