Union County officials declared the stage three shortages when a truck involved in an accident spilled some fuel into the Catawba River on the highway five bridge.
Officials say the fuel has moved through the river, but the county is slowly lifting the restrictions while the reserve water supply refills.
The bridge is upstream of the Catawba river water treatment plant.
Officials say the plant shutdown intake so it did not pull in the contaminated.
They are already lifting some of the restrictions and plan to be off stage 3 restrictions by Monday.
