Union County Schools Superintendent announces retirement

Union County Schools Superintendent Dr. Mary Ellis announced she will retire June 1, 2016, after four years with the school system.

Dr. Ellis recently gained attention after she was investigated, and eventually cleared by the SBI on questions into improper personal benefits and payments.

Dr. Ellis started a side business called Educatrx with a former executive of the computer company Lenovo, the same company in which UCPS signed a multi-million dollar contract for new computers.

The SBI said Ellis broke no laws.

“It has been an honor to serve as Superintendent of Union County Public Schools,” Ellis said. “This is an outstanding school system and I am proud to say that I was educated in Union County and have worked as a teacher and administrative leader in this district.”

The school board was planning to meet in a closed session to discuss doing an investigation of its own on Ellis.

A news release says Ellis has been in education for 38 years.
