Vandals target Jewish family in Steele Creek area

- Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police tell Fox 46 Charlotte that a Jewish family living in the Savannah Townhomes has been the target of vandalism on three separate occasions in less than a week.

The townhomes are located in the Steele Creek area.

"We do know these types of words and symbols are not exactly friendly or meaning to do anyone good. We have taken steps to increase our presence and increase our safety out there," said Major Gerald Smith.

Police have been stepping up patrols in and around the complex. Investigators said the incidents have been classified as hate crimes. The first incident was a swastika drawn on the back door of the family's home on Thursday.

The second incident, the words "see you" were written on one of the family's home windows. It was discovered on Saturday.

The third incident, the words "white power" were written at the complex's bathroom gym. A member of the same Jewish family discovered it Monday.

“Stop, it's unnecessary. We have some of the best detectives in the country. We're going to pull out every stop we can to discover who did this and hold them fully accountable for doing such things," Smith said.

Fox 46 Charlotte reached out to the family after the latest string of incidents. The family provided us with this statement: "We just want this person, whoever it is, to say hey, you know what? I'm sorry."

The family is considering moving out of their complex.

Police have no suspect information at this time but want anyone with information to come forward.

Additionally, investigators are working on setting up a community meeting to talk about the recent events.
