PINEVILLE, NC (FOX 46 WJZY) - A local wounded veterans organization is raising money to bring veterans on fishing excursions.
The group is called Hook Line and Heroes and they’re using nature to heal our heroes.
“We want them to get out in the beauty of God’s creation and just forget about all of the worries and all of the troubles that they have in everyday life as a veteran with a disability,” said Allan McCoy the founder of Hook Line and Heroes
The organization was founded in 2017 to help those who helped us.
“We want each and every veteran to have an unforgettable experience,” he said.
The veterans wake up at 4:45 a.m., go to one of the local lakes and fish until they’re ready to go home. Right now they’re doing one trip a month. The goal is to do two per month.
“Many of the veterans that we have taken our so far one of the first things that they’ve said is, ‘this is the best thing that could’ve happened to me, just getting out here on the water. If I catch a fish it’s a plus,’” he said.
The trips cost $1,000 each. They’re in the middle of a fundraising campaign through mid-September.
“It’s a way to get our veterans out, away from the hustles and bustles of life, into the peace and quiet,” he said.
McCoy isn’t a veteran himself, but his father served on D-day in World War II. He says seeing veterans come home is what called him to help
“Our country has lost sight of those veterans after they come home and that’s the reason why we’re doing this,” he said.
The fundraiser is through Red Basket. https://redbasket.org/1724 Also, all of the veterans get their own tackle set and fishing rod after their trip
