WANTED: Charlotte man adjusts handcuffs and steals police car

- The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department is actively searching for a man who they say was able to adjust his handcuffs while in custody and steal a marked patrol vehicle.

The incident began at 3:56 p.m. Wednesday when officers pulled over a vehicle in the 4000 block of Sunset Road. The driver was arrested and placed in handcuffs in the back of the police car.

While officers were searching the young man's vehicle, he was able to move his handcuffs in front of him and squeeze through a very small window inside the car that was open to allow air conditioning into the back area. The man then drove away in the officer's patrol vehicle.

According to Charlotte-Mekclenburg police, the vehicle was found a short time later, empty, at Hidden Creek Drive and Tansey Drive.

The suspect has been identified as 20-year-old Dontray Anotnio Pharr. He is wanted for larceny of a motor vehicle, possession of counterfeit instruments, possession of marijuana, possession of dug paraphernalia, resist delay obstruct, flee to elude arrest, impersonating law enforcement, aggressive driving, and injury to personal property.

CMPD said they're currently reviewing potential modifications to their windows to prevent this type of incident from happening again. Anyone with information on the whereabouts of Pharr is asked to call Crime Stoppers at (704) 334-1600.
