Three accused of beating elderly neighbor with bat in Union County

- A man, his mother and his girlfriend are facing multiple charges in connection to the violent assault of an elderly man at his home Sunday in Union County, deputies said.

Eddie Glenn Lowery, 30, his mother, Patricia Kay Benton, 49, along with his girlfriend, Elisha Chaney Hicks, 34, have all been arrested and face charges associated with a crime that has left Willie Nelson Adams, 73, in critical condition.

The investigation determined that Adams and Lowery lived only a few doors down from Adams and Lowery was known to visit at Adams’ home. Union County detectives believe Lowery, Benton and Hicks formulated a plan Saturday night to rob Adams.

The three went over to Adams’ home and attacked him with a blunt object, believed to be a baseball bat, once he opened the door. Adams was struck multiple times with the object before being robbed of his wallet and its contents.

Deputies also believe the three suspects broke the window of his vehicle parked in the yard and removed cash from inside. The three fled the crime scene leaving Adams in critical condition before being found after 12 p.m. Sunday.

All three suspects are charged with assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury, robbery with a dangerous weapon, and conspiracy to commit robbery.
