What makes Charlotte special? City prepares bid for Amazon headquarters

- What makes Charlotte special? The buildings? The people? The airport that's 10 minutes from Uptown? Which of those things would convince Amazon to spend five billion dollars on a new headquarters here? That's what nearly 100 people come together to brainstorm Wednesday morning.

"Let’s bring together a wide range of people from the community, let's put them together into small groups and let’s see what kind of ideas they come up with,” said Tim Whitmire, a local business owner.

He's helping the city bring together its bid to present to Amazon, but instead of talking about square footage and land acquisitions, they're talking about the real advantage.

“It's the people, it's the fact that so many of us have moved here from somewhere else and there's an openness to new ideas and social fluidity here,” Whitmire said.

“There's really a sense of fighting for one another. Sacrificing, serving one another,” added Zach Clark, another Charlotte resident.

If Amazon were to expand here it would bring 50,000 new jobs. Bids are due October 19.Charlotte launched CharlotteisPrime.com to accompany its bid.

More than 100 cities are in the running including Boston, Washington, D.C. and Atlanta, but folks here say the Queen City has something major cities don't.

“When you look at our cost of living that's one great example that DC is not going to be able to compete with Charlotte is cost of living,” Tariq Bokhari. Bokhari is helping write Charlotte's Amazon bid.

Amazon's short list of cities will be announced December 1.
