Woman battling construction company after debris hits car on I-77

- In Monday’s I-77 diaries a woman reached out to Fox 46 to get results. She says construction debris cracked her windshield and she's been waiting two months for the construction company to reimburse her claim.

"When the dirt hit my windshield, I couldn't see anything."

Andrea Gasparre says she was forced to drive blind.

She was on I-77 northbound just off the I-85 ramp.

"They were down below the overpass digging up dirt and the dirt was shooting out from the construction vehicle and up over the highway. It was a pretty wide spray too. Pretty high."

Then she heard a thud.

"Pretty loud, startled me. When the dirt passed, I saw the damage done to my windshield."

Andrea says a rock left its mark.

That was early June.

"I've been writing to Sugar Creek Construction to see if they would satisfy the claim I have to get my windshield fixed. I keep getting responses like we'll get back to you when we're ready for the next step. That's been two months."

Andrea reached out to Fox 46 to get results.

This Monday, we asked how many claims have been filed, how many reimbursed, and who paid.

Jen Thompson with the North Carolina Department of Transportation says, "we're in the process of gathering that information from the attorney general's office so it will probably be tomorrow before that information is back in our hands."

They are working to get us the information, but I-77 Mobility Partners and Sugar Creek Construction have been silent.

That's why NCDOT says to file the claim through them.

"That's the best way for us to help keep track and maintain a central clearing house for all things related to claims."

Andrea says she filed her claim with NCDOT this Monday.

She hopes they will get on Sugar Creek to satisfy her claim.

"To make somebody wait this long for a good answer from them is wrong."

You can file a claim on ncdot.gov. Click on 'contact us'. You'll get a tracking number to check the status of your claim.

We'll follow up with the numbers we receive from NCDOT Tuesday.
