CATAWBA COUNTY, NC (FOX 46 WJZY) - A Florida woman was killed in a two-vehicle collision Sunday night in Catawba County, police said.
The crash happened at 7:27 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 15 at the intersection of Northwest Blvd (U.S. 321) and W. 7th Street.
Upon arrival, Newton police officers discovered an SUV overturned on its driver’s side and a pick-up truck off the roadway against a utility pole. Both vehicles had extreme heavy damage.
Joanne Lisa Cigna, 44, of Boynton Beach, Florida was pronounced dead on scene. Cigna was a passenger in a vehicle driven by Ashley Marie Taylor, 32. Police said Taylor was transported to Catawba Valley Medical Center where she was then flown to Carolina’s Medical Center in Charlotte. At this time Taylor is listed in stable condition.
The driver of the SUV, Debra Miller Huss, 62, of Newton was transported to Catawba Valley Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries. Two passengers in the SUV, Caroline Lee Arru, 5, and Ella Rose Arru, 6, both of Conover and granddaughters of the driver, were treated at the scene and released to their parents.
The initial investigation appears to indicate that the pick-up truck driven by Taylor was traveling east on W. 7th Street when she was struck by the SUV being driven by Huss in the intersection.
A witness at the scene stated that he was traveling north behind Huss, who had a green traffic signal at the time of the accident. This investigation is continuing.
