Car wreck creates hours of traffic problems after utility pole, lines get taken down

- State troopers say around 10:30 p.m. a car crossed the center line near Highway 150 and Doolie Rd., hitting a utility pole bringing down about a dozen utility lines.

Scott Wallace heard the crash from his house, about a half mile away, and went to see what happened.

"Went completely through the telephone pole just completely through the middle of it and ended on the curb about another 75 feet away," Wallace said.

A stretch of Hwy 150 closed as crews work to replace the pole and lines causing traffic to be rerouted all the way around Lake Norman.

"I needed to go about 2 miles and I ended up having to go about 30 miles around the lake so about 2 hours of extra travel time this morning and my wife had to do the same going in the opposite direction."

The owner of Sports Page saying the traffic is hurting business.

"It's hurting us pretty good, we're pretty slow today… the Duke power guys are out there working," he said.

Lake Norman High School, Lakeshore Middle and Elementary all closed while several others opened with a two-hour delay.

Takilla Combs and her boys are making the best of a day off.

"They were happy to be out of school until the electricity went out, we were playing board games and basketball so it's been a good day," she said.

Instead of driving hours around she parked at a nearby church and like many others walked to the store.

"The house is still kind of cool, stuff in the refrigerator is still pretty cool. We didn't have any milk and the boys wanted cereal. We're going to barbecue," said Combs.

While they make the best of the day some are just concerned with getting back home.

"There's three roads around the lake: Highway 73, Highway 16 and 150 and unfortunately you can't have a bridge everywhere you need one."
