YORK COUNTY, SC (FOX 46 WJZY) - Six York County sheriff's deputies were involved in sexual misconduct while on duty, according to the York County Sheriff's Office.
After receiving an anonymous complaint stating that several deputies were engaging in improper conduct in July, Sheriff Kevin Tolson ordered the Office of Professional Standards to conduct an internal investigation.
The investigation revealed that six deputies were engaged in sexual conduct while on duty. One sergeant and one deputy were immediately fired. Two more sergeants and one captain were suspended without pay for two week, and one lieutenant was demoted.
“The results of this investigation are very troubling and cast a dark cloud over the York County Sheriff’s Office and its reputation as a professional organization,” said Sheriff Tolson. “The actions of these officers have undermined the public’s confidence in our organization and required swift and serious action.”
According to the Sheriff's Office much of the conduct took place before Sheriff Tolson took office in January.
“The harshest discipline was dispensed to those who violated policy and public trust while I have been Sheriff,” said Sheriff Tolson. “I showed leniency to those Deputies whose conduct occurred years, even decades ago, but make no mistake this conduct will not be tolerated in this agency on my watch.”
