Man charged in Charlotte Human Trafficking case

Detectives in Spring Lake, NC have charged Robin Applewhite with human trafficking after a woman was brought to Charlotte against her will.

Investigators say Applewhite picked up a woman in an unknown location in Fayetteville, N.C. and took her back to his place in Spring Lake. He then provided her with illegal drugs and locked her in his basement with two other women.

The victim was then taken to hotels in Charlotte and Raleigh where she was forced to perform sex acts for money.

According to police, Wednesday morning the woman escaped from Applewhite's place by breaking open the basement door. The woman ran to Fort Bragg where they contacted the police.

When police arrested Applewhite this morning they searched his home and found two more women in their early 20's living in the basement. They also found a handgun.

Applewhite  was also charged with 2nd degree kidnapping, and sexual servitude. He was given a $250,000 secured bond and is currently at the Cumberland County Detention Center.

The investigation is ongoing and more charges are possible.
