Police: Children left alone in car while parents attended wine tasting

WASHINGTON, D.C. (WTTG) -- The parents of two small children are facing first degree cruelty to children charges after someone called and reported seeing the children in a car alone near the corner of 23rd Street NW and L street NW .

Around four thirty this afternoon police got a call from someone, concerned that two small children were alone in a car.

Shortly after several police cars and an ambulance raced to the scene, not knowing how long the children had been in the car alone or what in what condition they would find them.

The parents were taken to the police station and charged with first degree cruelty to children.

A police officer watched over the young kids  in a patrol car waiting for "children and family services" to arrive.
Across the street, patrons at this restaurant say the couple was at a private wine tasting event and were surprised when police entered the restaurant.

This patron says he saw police leave the restaurant with the couple making it clear they wanted to address an issue with them.

Once outside other patrons were shocked to learn the circumstances of the police visit.

The children were kept in the police car for about an hour until they were picked up by child and family services around 6:30.

The official police report has yet to be released so we still don't know how long police believe The children were alone in the car.

Again the parents facing a charge first degree cruelty to children.
