IREDELL COUNTY, NC (Fox 46 WJZY) - Close to 70 people are being but behind bars in "Operation Autumn Sweep," a major drug bust in Iredell County.
Deputies are hoping the bust puts the bad guys behind bars and cuts down on crime.
By 7 a.m. Monday morning, nearly 25 people had already been put behind bars in Iredell County.
"All of them are drug dealers," said Sheriff Darren Campbell. "Or repeat offenders, most of them were both."
There are around 69 people accused of selling all kinds of illegal drugs. The drug bust operation targets drug dealers and those associated with drug sales throughout Iredell County.
"This has been one of the largest busts I remember we've done," said Sheriff Campbell. "We want to send a message that we aren't going to tolerate drug dealing in our county."
Around $40,000 worth of illegal drugs were seized within the first few hours of the operation.
"If we can interrupt the supply line-- that has a great impact on our crime rates and helps drive down crime," said Sheriff Campbell.
With dozens more still wanted, the sheriff has a message to those bringing drugs into Iredell County.
"We told you so," he said. "We were gonna do it and we followed through and if you weren't on the list today, I guarantee your time will come if you keep dealing drugs in Iredell County."
Anyone who knows about drugs being dealt in Iredell County is asked to call the sheriff's office at 704-878-3180.
