Facebook, Blue Star Families and USAA announced Thursday they have teamed up and released an online safety guide designed specifically for military families.
They said the guide provides information on the safety policies and tools Facebook provides to help service members connect and share with friends and family while maintaining their personal safety.
Facebook said they've worked closely with USAA and Blue Star Families to ensure the guide addressed some of the unique risks and responsibilities faced by military families.
“More than 93 percent of military families use Facebook to stay connected. We understand the unique safety risks they face and want to provide the technical tools and practical tips that will allow them to keep in close contact with their friends and families while maintaining their personal safety on our platform,” said Antigone Davis, Head of Global Safety for Facebook, in a written statement.
The Military Families Online Safety Guide explains how to utilize Facebook’s privacy, security, and safety tools to do things such as enable additional security features, block someone from seeing what you post, or report something inappropriate.
The guide also offers tips for using fast-changing technology in a safe and smart way – suggestions include everything from protecting sensitive or personal information on your home network to protecting your children and family from risks related to over-sharing, poor judgment, or bad digital citizenship.
The guide addresses situations unique to military families, for example, sharing seemingly innocuous personal information and how that could inadvertently conflict with good security procedures.
