Panthers name Marty Hurney interim GM

- The Carolina Panthers have announced Wednesday that former general manager, Marty Hurney, will take over as interim general manager following the firing of Dave Gettleman.

Hurney previously worked with the Panthers from 1998-2012, serving as GM beginning in 2002. He took the franchise to its first Super Bowl appearance in 2003 and went to the playoffs three times during his tenure.

“I never lost the connection with the organization,” Hurney told the team. “I’ve gained a lot of perspective and have looked at things in different ways. I think I can help this team in a lot of areas. I think I’ve grown. And I feel I’m better prepared to come in this time and do a better job than I did over the 12 years I was general manager last time.”

Hurney will assume Gettleman's duties, the man who replaced him at the end of the 2012 season. The Panthers announced Gettleman's firing on Monday.
