MATTHEWS, NC (WJZY) - George Maoury is a former bodybuilder and has been a professional trainer for over 20 years.
It was the early 2000's that Maoury made the decision to train young athletes ages 6-18.
“I see how I did things improperly and I want these children and youth to hopefully learn from my mistakes,” said Maoury.
He is the head coach of Athletic Revolution located in Matthews (701 Matthews-Mint Hill Rd, Matthews, NC 28105) and has trained thousands of kids in his time there.|
Maoury credits his success of being able to connect with the kids he trains to being a big kid himself.
“I can communicate with kids better than I can with adults. Friends will have parties and instead of socializing with the adults, I’m downstairs in the basement playing handballs with the kids,” said Maoury.
According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, “Each year more than 3.5 million sports-related injuries requiring medical treatment occur in children under the age of 15."
Maoury acknowledges that some of the injuries are contact related, which are nearly impossible to avoid, but over 60% of them occur in practice settings.
“A big part of that is due to improper training the overly aggressive the trying to train elementary school kids like they're high school kids, middle school kids like they're collegiate kids, and high school kids like they're pros. I wanted to be taken under someone's wing. I wanted someone to teach me how to do the right thing,” Maoury added.
Athletic Revolution is hosting a training weekend for local coaches on June 16 & 17 at the gym to teach the importance of properly training young athletes. Maoury says they plan on bringing in some well-known fitness coaches for the event.
