Charlotte - With an unblemished record and a victory in the Florida Derby, Nyquist took over as the Kentucky Derby favorite over Mohaymen.
This early derby contender has had a great 2-year-old campaign marking victories in the Front Runner at Santa Anita and the Breeders' Cup Juvenile at Keeneland in 2015. Nyquist waited to make his 3-year-old debut, but it was the right choice for trainer Doug O'Neill as they went on to win the seven-furlong San Vicente (G3) on February 15th.
Trainer O'Neill decided to pass on the Santa Anita Derby and head south to Florida due to their eligibility for a $1 million bonus if they would win the Florida Derby. It was too much to pass on and it paid off as Nyquist won by 3-1/4 lengths.
Trainer Doug O'Neill seems to be making the right calls with his colt, as he has moved up the betting field to +300.
While many look toward closers when choosing a Kentucky Derby winner, and this year's field is packed with them, you can't overlook the consistent accomplishments of Nyquist, who will also have one of the most accomplished jockeys looking to rise to the occasion.
