The Panthers have applied a franchise tag to All-Pro cornerback Josh Norman, according to the NFL.com's Ian Rapoport.

The franchise tag means the Panthers have signed Norman to a one year deal. It prevents another team from grabbing Norman as a free agent.
Norman will make $13.9 million in the deal, which is the average of the top 5 players in his position.
“I’m excited that Josh will be back with the Panthers next season,” head coach Ron Rivera said via a press release. “He played very well for us this year and was a big part of the success we enjoyed as a team.”
It normally means the team is working with the player to sign a longer term deal, but it's not clear if that's the case between the Panthers and Norman.
The deadline to apply the franchise tag was Tuesday 4 p.m.
