Fort Mill Middle teacher puts students in 'growth mindset'

- FOX 46 Charlotte recognizes teachers who get results in the classroom. This week, we introduce you to Naomi Elkin-- an 8th grade math teacher at Fort Mill Middle School, who makes sure her students know the importance of critical thinking.

Middle schoolers don't often agree on much-- but if there's one thing Ms. Elkin's 8th grade students can agree on -- it's that she's a great teacher.

“She's really enthusiastic about making sure you learn everything," said Student Kat Overman.

Ms. Elkin focuses on what she calls a "growth mindset" concept in the classroom.  She encourages students to think critically and work through mistakes.

"Her classroom is a problem-solving lab," said Fort Mill Middle Principal Tony Caricari.  "And it's exciting to see the growth in her students and her as a professional."

Ms. Elkin is this week's Teacher Getting Results.

"It's amazing," she said.  "I'm sort of still in shock because it's a team effort-- not just me -- it's the other teachers I work with and the students."

Her "growth mindset" approach to learning challenges students and keeps them engaged in figuring out how to think through and solve problems.

"I do it because I love the kids," said Elkin.  "And just being with them is the best part of the day."

Elkin is not only the math department chair at Fort Mill Middle, but she also serves on the school's leadership team and is the coach for the "math counts" team.
