CHARLOTTE, NC (FOX 46 WJZY) - UPDATE: Severe thunderstorm warnings have been issued for Cabarrus, Iredell, Mecklenburg and Rowan counties until 6:30 p.m. For the latest on weather, follow us on Facebook and Twitter.
With heat index values over 100 degrees across much of the area, it doesn’t take much to fire off storms with such an over saturated atmosphere. Storms have already begun to fire near Rutherfordton and continue to move into the western Piedmont and Foothills. The timing of the storms will be from 3:30-6 PM across the Foothills and 4:30-8 PM here in Charlotte and the I-77 corridor.
With the atmosphere so unstable today some storms may reach severe levels. The main hazard will be winds that could gust over 55 mph. This is a strong enough wind to drop power lines and large trees causing damage to homes and widespread power outages.
The storms this afternoon could match the same strength as yesterday’s storms. In all over 30 storm reports came in from Catawba county through Mecklenburg county and even wind damage reported in Union county. With the soil very saturated from the recent rains, winds don’t have to be as strong to cause damage. A wind speed of 40 mph is all it takes to knock down a large tree.
