Recipe: Koulouria (Twisted Butter Cookies)

3 sticks butter, softened

1 1/2 cups sugar

2 eggs

2 teaspoons vanilla extract

4 teaspoons baking powder

1/2 teaspoon baking soda

5 1/2 cups sifted all purpose flour

4 tablespoons ice cold water


1. Cream butter and sugar together. Add eggs and vanilla. Mix well.

2. Combine baking powder, baking soda and flour. Slowly add this to the butter in mixer, alternating with the water until a soft dough forms.

3. Pinch off pieces of dough and roll into 6-inch long strips. Fold strips in half and twist into a rope. Place 1-inch apart on parchment paper lined cookie sheet.

4. Bake at 350 degrees for 15 minutes or until lightly browned.
