One person was killed in a car accident in west Charlotte, according to Medic.

The crash occurred in the 10500 block of Mt. Holly Rd. near Chattaroy Dr. just after 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday.

Upon arrival, police found a 2002 silver Nissan Altima that had driven off of the roadway into a creek. MEDIC and Charlotte firefighters arrived, and the victim, Benjamin Max Jones, 20, was pronounced dead on the scene at 3:42 p.m.

Jones' car had gone over the bridge, overturned and gone down a 20-foot embankment, landing on its side in a creek.

Jones was not wearing a seatbelt and was partially ejected from the car and pinned underneath it. After hours of work, crews were able to extract him and the car from the creek. He was transported to the hospital and the car was towed away.

Mt. Holly Rd. from I-485 was shut down for most of the afternoon. Officials directed drivers to use Moores Chapel Rd. instead.

Police say neither speed nor alcohol appeared to be a contributing factor in the crash.
