MATTHEWS, N.C. (FOX 46 CHARLOTTE) - One person is dead after a tree fell onto a vehicle Sunday in Matthews, according to police.
The incident happened about 4:16 p.m. near the intersection of E. John Street and Charles Buckley Way.
According to Matthews police, the vehicle was heading eastbound on E. John Street when the tree fell. After being struck by the tree, the vehicle traveled through the front lawn of Matthews Church of God, located at 517 E. John Street, striking the front of the church. The vehicle finally stopped in a neighbor's yard next to the church.
The driver of the car was pronounced dead on scene. His wife, who was a passenger in the car, was taken to Carolina Medical Center-Main with minor injuries.
E. John Street is closed near Charles Buckley as crews work to clear the tree. Drivers are asked to use NC-74 as an alternate route.
Authorities have not released the name of the victim or a description of the car.
