Law enforcement in a community outside Knoxville, Tennessee are investigating the shooting death of an 8-year-old girl, according to reporting by WBIR/WTNZ. Investigators believe she was shot by her 11-year-old neighbor.
The sheriff told local media that the 11-year-old boy shot the girl with his father's 12-gauge single-shot shotgun. The names of the victims have not yet been released but authorities said they attended the same elementary school.
"The staff of White Pine School and Jefferson County Schools are saddened by this incident, but want to assure parents and community that counselors are on site to assist students and staff," school principal Bill Walker said in a released statement.
The boy was scheduled to appear in court Monday. The local sheriff would not release any details about a possible motives but neighbors told reporters they two had been arguing over a puppy.
