ROCK HILL, S.C. (FOX 46 CHARLOTTE) - A teen has been arrested in connection to an early morning sexual assault and robbery, Rock Hill police say.
Terry Shaimek Tyler, 16, has been charged with criminal sexual conduct, armed robbery, kidnapping, grand larceny, possession of a pistol by a person under 18 and possession of a firearm during a violent crime. Police say the charges are serious enough for Tyler to be tried as an adult.
Tyler is accused of holding a 21-year-old woman at gunpoint and sexually assaulting her around 4:30 a.m. near Winthrop University's campus, officials said.
The incident happened near the Rose Street Apartments and Alumni Drive within the city limits of Rock Hill. According to police, the victim was walking toward her apartment when Tyler pulled a gun on her. He had her walk to a darkened area and then assaulted her, police said.
"It's not surprising because we are an open campus, but it's scary at the same time because we live here," one student told FOX 46.
Others say they'd like more emergency call boxes and better lighting on and around campus.
"I might not walk as late as i do but i always try to be with someone if i'm not with someone I call someone."
Tyler then dumped the victim's purse and took her iPhone, ID cards and keys. Investigators said the victim's car. a 2012 gold Cadillac SRX, was then stolen.
With the help of the York County Sheriff's Office, police were able to find the victim's car, and Tyler was found and taken into custody at the Sunoco gas station around 11:30 a.m. on India Hook Road.
Debbie Humphries, who works at the gas station, says she was shocked by the scene she turned around to.
"Turned around that was all happening I didn't know if the people in the car had guns because it was full of people," Humphries said.
Police say there were five other minors in the car with him at the time, but they had no involvement in the crime and were all realeased to their families.
Tyler is being held at the SC Department of Juvenile Justice. Anyone with additional information is asked to contact Rock Hill police at 803--329-7293.
